Maybelline Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liner Review

Hey Guys! It’s been a while (lol, how many times have I written that?) but I’m BACK and super excited to share my thoughts on a new launch from Maybelline!  Before I get into the products and my opinions, I want to let you guys know that this post is sponsored by Maybelline and all opinions expressed are my own.

I was lucky enough to receive a VERY generous package from Maybelline with EVERY SHADE of the new Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liner.  They also included 6 shades of their new lipsticks, which I’ve tried before and like a lot.  I included some swatches of the lipsticks just in case anyone is curious – I found the bottom 2 shades to be a little patchy on the first swipe, but the pigmentation evened out after a few layers.  The bottom 3 shades stained my arm, so plan ahead if you’re planning to purchase and wear these out and need to have nude lips the next day!  I’d also note that even the matte shades weren’t liquid lipstick level matte.  They had a demi-matte/satin finish, which is probably why they’re so much more comfortable than a liquid lipstick, and don’t crumble up over the course of the day.  I applied one layer and blotted with a tissue for a matte stain effect, and added a second layer (and blotted a second time) for a more intensely pigmented lip look.  Overall, I found these lipsticks to be very comfortable and easy to apply.  While my favorite high end lipstick is still my number one, these lipsticks from Maybelline are definitely my first choice from the drugstore.

Alright, now onto the lip liners.

I’m just gonna be honest – I HATE lipliner and eyeliner safety packaging.  I had to use tweezers to get the plastic wrapping off after nearly breaking a nail (first world probs, I know).  BUT – the struggle of opening up the liners actually showed me a part of the product packaging that I definitely would have missed otherwise.  Wait for it… Maybelline included a sharpener that is embedded in the end of the lipliner! The liners are self-sharpening/twist up, so you can always access the product, but the addition of the sharpener ensures that you’ll always be able to create a perfectly precise line.  This is critical for me, since I only use lipliner when I’m out for a special event, and I don’t carry concealer with me to clean up any messy edges.  Having the sharpener included in the product means that you don’t even have to worry about clean up, because you’ll always have a crisp line.

The shade range itself is definitely nude focused (a plus in my eyes, since nude lipliners can pair with just about anything), but a few bright pinks, deep purples, and reds are also included.  There’s definitely a shade for everyone – and at the price point, you can splurge and buy a few.

The nude, bright pink, and red shades were absolute perfection.  First, they were pigmented enough to apply an opaque line in just one swipe, which means no retracing.  Second, they had the perfect balance of waxiness to creaminess – they were creamy enough to glide smoothly over my lips’ natural wrinkles and texture without any tugging, but waxy enough to maintain a crisp edge and not bleed or smudge outside of the line I placed.

The purple toned shades unfortunately gave me some trouble – I found these ones to be consistently crumbly and patchy, which was a huge bummer, because the colors themselves were gorgeous.  These shades just didn’t have the same creaminess that the others had, and (as you can see in my swatches) were much harder to apply cleanly.

Now, raise your hand if you’ve ever been personally victimized by a bold colored lipliner or lipstick (*raises hand*).  Maybelline has something for you – the ‘Invisible’ lipliner.  This is the one in the white tube, looks white when you twist it up, but applies clear.  It’s actually swatched on the top left of my arm, just to prove that it is truly invisible.  This is something I would recommend to ANYONE who has a shaky hand, feels intimidated by dark lipliners, or just wants an easier way to ensure clean edges to their lipstick.  Applying this just outside the natural lipline helped keep my red lipstick confined to my actual lips and prevented the bleeding/feathering I often see over the course of a night.

Will you give these a try?  Let me know in the comments below!
