January birchbox review 2015

The theme for January could not have more accurately described the contents of my January Birchbox.  Everything I received seemed more or less dedicated to proper preparation, which was essential for me as I changed jobs mid-January.  In addition to preparing myself mentally (yay yoga and Korean sheet masks!), I found some great products that helped me keep my skin healthy during a very busy time.  Detailed reviews and how I used the products are below!

Paula’s Choice RESIST Moisture Renewal Oil Booster: I tried using this a few different ways.  First, I layered it between my serum and my moisturizer.  I never really felt like I was able to spread the oil around before it soaked into my face, so I started mixing two drops in with my day and night moisturizers.  This application method worked the best for me and gave an even surface to apply my makeup on top of.  My skin felt softer and looked more radiant after just one full day of use.  I did find that twice a day was too much for my skin – I began to notice lots of oily patches in my T-Zone which was not super attractive.  I am taking a break from the oil to try to even things back out, but will continue to use it over my cheeks as they tend to get the most dry.

Whish Three Whishes Body Butter: There’s a reason this is one of the best-selling products on Birchbox… it’s amazing!  I can’t believe it took 2 years to finally get to sample the body butter but it was worth the wait.  It absorbed into my skin easily and kept my legs feeling hydrated until my next shower.  I did have to use a little more of this product than my regular moisturizer, but the formula is a lot thicker and my skin stayed softer for longer.  The lavender smell was also very calming and not at all abrasively chemical-smelling.

Manna Kadar Lip Locked (All of Me):  Another great lip product this month!  I used this both alone and under a brighter lip color.  Alone, it felt nourishing and gave my lips a subtle hint of pink, but this particular shade wasn’t strong enough against my medium skin tone.  I skipped chapstick and layered this underneath my current favorite lipstick (another Birchbox find).  Let me tell you… I usually have to reapply my lipstick a few times throughout the night.  With the Manna Kadar Lip Locked underneath, my lipstick stayed on and didn’t dry out all the way through a night at the wine bar followed by LATE night pizza.  A definite win in my book!

Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper:  I’ll admit it – I’m skeptical when it comes to gels promising the world to wavy-haired girls.  My hair is often frizzy, infrequently smooth, and almost always looks like #iwokeuplikethis (more often than not, I did…).  I tried the Curl Keeper in 2 different ways: first (as always) on its’ own to see if it actually did what it said it would, then mixed into my standard routine.  I had excellent results each way.  I started with leave-in conditioner (all over) and a hair oil (ends only), then worked a quarter-sized dollop of the Curl Keeper into my hair from the ends up by first swatting, then scrunching my hair to evenly distribute the product without pulling any of the natural curl (wave, really) down.  I flipped my head over and used my blow dryer to dry the roots only; I let the rest of my hair air dry to preserve the curl.  My hair dried in gorgeous waves that looked like I had just come from the beach, minus the greasy roots and salty, crunchy strands.  This was my favorite product this month, hands down.

Karma Organic Spa Nail Polish Remover:  Having just gotten a great gel manicure, I have yet to sample this one!  I will say, anything with tea tree oil is A-OK with me – it smells great and basically cures evil (swelling, redness, bacteria, etc…).
